British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels down to the site... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," he commented. "They were part of thousands of UK service members on duty over the festive period. This mission, to remove militants who endanger our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
